Portfolios with Purpose
How to Play
STEP 1: Identify Your Class
-
Master Class: Entry into this class is by invitation only from the PwP Board of Directors and includes many of the world's most renowned investors.
Entry fee is $10,000.
-
Professional Class: Entry into this class requires 2 years of experience in the finance industry. Applicants are subject to approval by PwP's Approval Committee (far less bureaucratic than it sounds).
Entry fee is $1,000.
-
Novice Class: This class is open to the general public.
Entry fee is $100.
STEP 2: Select Five Stocks
- Each participant selects five different global equities that will comprise his/her portfolio.
- Players can buy or short sell a stock.
- Each security must have a market capitalization of at least $500 million (as quantified by the fully diluted share count, defined by US GAAP or IFRS, multiplied by the share price on the beginning record date.)
- Each security will be weighted equally from the final trading day of the previous calendar year ("beginning record date").
STEP 3: Select a Charity
- Each player competes on behalf of his/her favorite charity.
- Portfolios with Purpose retains the authority to reject or accept any charity in its sole discretion. Certain organizations are ineligible based on the following guidelines:
- Organizations that do not have a 501(c)(3) exemption, except for public schools.
- Community trusts or similar organizations, including Charitable Remainder Trusts, Donor Advised Funds, Family Foundations, or charitable organizations classified as private foundations or trusts.
- Fraternal and labor organizations, lobbying groups, partisan political organizations, candidates, or to support specific legislation.
- Anti-business organizations or organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, disability, religion, ethnic or national origin, or sexual orientation.
- Religious programs or organizations, except when the activities being sponsored are non-sectarian.
Objective
The objective is to maximize total return (share price plus dividends) of the participant’s portfolio over the course of a full calendar year.
Contest Begins/Ends
- The contest begins on the first trading day of the year and ends on the last trading day of the year.
- Novice Class players can opt-in for a quarterly contest (entry fee, $25 per quarter) at the beginning of the calendar year and a winner will be announced at the end of each quarter.
Calculating Performance
- Each security will be weighted equally from the final trading day of the previous calendar year ("beginning record date").
- Dividends for both long and short positions will factor into the total return calculation on the ex-dividend date.
- For corporate actions, PwP's Pricing Committee will determine how to adjust for said action.
- When there is an acquisition, the cash acquisition price (or last trading price for stock deals) at the close of the deal will be the final price of the equity for the calendar year.
- The cost of borrow will NOT be factored into the total return calculation.
- The Pricing Committee will have final authority in the closing price in every circumstance or situation.
Winners Receive
- The net* proceeds from each class will be split among the top three winners from each class at a 60%, 30%, 10% ratio (1st, 2nd and 3rd).
- Learn from the Masters: The 1st place winners from the Novice and Professional Classes get to have lunch with a Master Class investor of their choice.
- 1st place winners in each class are presented with the 'Investor of the Year' Award; they, along with their charity, are honored at the year-end dinner.
