David's Dream and Believe Canc...
David's Dream and Believe Cancer Foundation
I was diagnosed with Stage IV head and neck cancer (Oropharyngeal Cancer) on April 20, 2010. I was given very little chance to survive my diagnosis but on November 11, 2010 I was informed I was cancer free after a vicious cancer battle. I created David's Dream to help those families dealing with a cancer diagnosis. I meet personally with almost every patient/family and stay in touch with all of them. We set out to help one family a year and helped over 50 just this year alone. We are dedicated to our mission statement and the patients/families we serve. I have attended way too many funerals over the past 2 years and I believe I'm alive to pay it forward for the rest of my life. Thank you, David

Give Directly
More than a billion people live in absolute poverty, none of them in the U.S. Give Directly provides direct financial assistance to the global poor. They don’t dictate how recipients spend the money, but they do research it. So far, they’ve found that cash transfers benefit children, have a long-term positive impact on household income, and aren’t “misspent” on drugs as negative stereotypes might suggest.

Kleine Levin Syndrome Foundati...
Kleine Levin Syndrome Foundation
Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) is a rare and complex neurological disorder characterized by periods of excessive amounts of sleep and altered behavior. The disorder strikes adolescents primarily. Kleine-Levin Syndrome episodes are cyclical. When present, KLS symptoms persist for days, weeks or even months, during which time all normal daily activities stop. Individuals are not able to attend school, work or care for themselves. Most are bedridden, tired and uncommunicative even when awake. In between episodes those diagnosed with KLS appear to be in perfect health with no evidence of behavioral or physical dysfunction. However they function daily with the frightful reality that they could become sick again at any moment. KLS episodes may continue to reoccur for a decade or longer with devastating effects on the adolescent’s life and family. This is a condition that I personally was sick with for 10+ years during my teenage years and it robbed me of big pieces my life. It is important to f

Canteen Magazine
Canteen Magazine
Since 2008, Canteen has run after-school programs in the literary and visual arts for at-risk middle school students in Harlem. Canteen also produces a literary magazine designed to promote the creative process. I admire the goal to promote process, rather than outcome, as process is the element we have the most influence over. This charity was founded by my brother and I am an ardent supporter of both the organization and its cause.

Joyful Heart Foundation
The Joyful Heart Foundation works to foster a community that turns toward the issues of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. Such a community, empowered with knowledge, courage and compassion, can support survivors of this violence and engage in an open dialogue about how to collaboratively end the cycle of violence and abuse. This charity seeks to prevent abuse, which not only destroys the lives of victims, but also their spouses, children, and other family members.

Minds Matter of NYC
Minds Matter of NYC
Minds Matter of NYC is a mentoring organization that works closely with low-income, high-achieving students throughout all boroughs of New York City to ensure acceptance into four-year colleges and prepare them for college and long-term success. I have been involved in Minds Matter of NYC for two-and-a-half years as a mentor. As such, I have witnessed firsthand the deep positive impact the organization has on these talented students, who are frequently the first in their families to pursue their college dreams and often lack the college preparation resources their peers have at their fingertips.

National Dance Institute
National Dance Institute
National Dance Institute (NDI) was founded in 1976 by Jacques d’Amboise in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage children and motivate them toward excellence.
Each year, NDI transforms the lives of tens of thousands of New York City public school children and their communities through weekly classes, short-term residencies, and public performances. Under the artistic direction of Ellen Weinstein and a staff of professional teaching artists, programs are offered to all children, transcending barriers of language, culture, and physical and cognitive challenges. Children learn to work together and develop personal standards of excellence, a pride of achievement, and a curiosity about the world that supports their success in school and in life.
No child pays a penny for NDI’s core programs.

KLS Foundation
A very good friend of mine and his sister both suffer from an extremely rare neurological disorder called Kleine-Levin Syndrome. Those affected by KLS suffer from excessive amounts of sleep with episodes that come on at a moment's notice. An episode can last from a few days to months or even years. Both my friend and his sister have had prolonged episodes lasting from 6 months to over a year. I have seen first hand how this disease can affect a person's life. Unfortunately, the research to cure this extremely rare disease is extremely under funded and receives very little government support. The KLS foundation relies on private donors. If I am fortunate enough to place in the PwP competition, the money provided to the KLS Foundation would be very well used, very much appreciated and be supporting a great cause.

Demand a Plan
Demand a Plan is a campaign of Mayors Against Illegal Guns -- a national, bipartisan coalition of mayors working to make America’s communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands. Co-founded in 2006 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the coalition has grown from a committed group of 15 members to more than 800 mayors, including Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, from major cities and small towns around the country. We have almost a million grassroots supporters, making us the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country.
Protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, drug abusers, the seriously mentally ill and other dangerous people. Mayors Against Illegal Guns advocates for common-sense measures that will close deadly gaps in our gun laws and make sure law enforcement agencies have the tools they need to detect an

Every 8 minutes, a child in Texas experiences abuse or neglect. More than 5,000 children in the Houston area have experienced such life-threatening abuse or neglect that they had to be removed from their homes and placed in foster care. Child Advocates trains everyday people to advocate for the best interests of these children in court so they can find safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible.
